The Latest “Alternative” to the Boy Scouts of America

Boy ScoutsA recent article in Godfather Politics revealed a new organization being formed to offer an alternative, Christian-principled organization that will attempt to preserve the purity and original standards of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) – pre-2014 version.

That would sound like good news to many who bemoan the loss of moral high ground that resulted from the national committee of the BSA deciding to admit openly homosexual members into their ranks.  To many, the heart and soul of the BSA was left on the convention floor with that most unfortunate vote.

After all, the BSA was created as a Christian-based organization intended to serve as a vehicle for molding young men into Godly, principled, honorable citizen leaders, parents, and to show them  – at the same time – the beauty and adventure available in God’s outdoor kingdom.

The new organization, described more extensively in the article, has not been officially named yet, has not appointed a permanent board. Plans are underway for a convention in September to officially name the group and begin accepting applications for sponsoring organizations and commence operation as of January 1, 2014.  Most of the sponsoring organizations could be expected to comprise churches that have chosen to sever ties with the BSA over the requirement to admit homosexuals.

Their stated goal?

“Our mission is simple and clear: to guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.”

“In addition, the organization’s membership policy will focus on sexual purity rather than sexual orientation.  The policy will read, in part: ‘the proper context for sexual relations is only between a man and a woman in the covenant of marriage.’

“For 100 years terms like ‘morally straight’ and ‘clean and reverent’ that are in the Boy Scout oath and law were understood from a Christian worldview.  The founder of scouting even said ‘scouting is nothing more than applied Christianity.’ So we are trying to restore that ideal.”

In the last paragraph of the article, however, the author provides one small bug in the ointment for this group before they actually sign up their first scout (or whatever their members will be called).

The group has apparently taken the position that they will not screen members to avoid enrolling homosexuals.  Without some mechanism to prevent this sinful activity from reaching into this organization before it even begins to complete its foundational work, is to loftily state very noble goals and then immediately begin building the organization on a bed of sand twenty feet from the surf line on a North Atlantic beach!

It is unfortunate that seemingly intelligent, self-identified Christian men (and women, perhaps) can develop a noble idea, generate enough interest to hold as many as fifty sponsoring groups together long enough to establish an entity that will bring the dream of purity back to “scouting” in America. And yet be so naïve as to believe that the devil will somehow pass them over and give them free reign to proceed unmolested in a world that is full of predators. Predators who would like nothing better than to be provided with a new playground full of potential victims whose parents thought the organization a safe haven from the rusted hulk of the BSA and what it used to stand for.

So before you jump into another national fiasco of politically correct, half-way attempts at fixing the basic problem of character loss in American youth; be warned.  This new group may be possessed of a fatal flaw that will shoot it down before it reaches sufficient altitude to soar like an eagle (scout).

Think about it.  Investigate. Decide for yourself if this group measures up to Christ Jesus’ standard of righteousness.

As the author aptly points out in conclusion…

“They are compromising just as much as the Boy Scouts.  It reminds me of Rev. 3:15-16 which says:

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot.  Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” “
